1790-1840 CENSUS AGE CATEGORIES (except for 1790, pertaining here to
"free white males and females").
1790: (1) free white males 16 and over, (2) free white males under 16,
(3) free white females, (4) all other free persons, (5) slaves.
1800 and 1810 (males and females): (1) under 10, (2) 10 and under 16,
(3) 16 and under 26, (4) 26 and under 45, (5) 45 and over.
1820 (males and females): (1) under 10, (2) 10 and under 16, (3) 16 and
under 26, (4) 16 to 18 (males only),* (5) 26 and under 45, (6) 45 and
over. *The extra category was for males, to determine the total
manpower that could be called up in times of war. Besides confusing
people interested in their ancestors, this category apparently confused
census takers, resulting in many reports of (3) and (4) that are
suspect.
1830-1840 (males and females): (1) under 5, (2) 5 and under 10, (3) 10
and under 15, (4) 15 and under 20, (5) 20 and under 30, (6) 30 and
under 40, (7) 40 and under 50 (8) 50 and under 60 (9) 60 and under 70,
(10) 70 and under 80, (11) 80 and under 90, (12) 90 and under 100, and
(13) 100 and over.

This and some other information on the early Jamisons (and Gaffs) comes from several 1979-1980 letters to Mrs. Ethel Dedering from Edith Kepler, 186 St., James St., Marion, Ohio. I obtained copies from Nancye Thibodeau, Houston Texas. Edith Kepler apparently wrote of the Jamisons mainly from memory of undocumented family history information. Although the information is most valuable, she cited no sources in these informal letters to Mrs. Dedering.

This anonymously–authored Fleming manuscript is in the possession of the Heald family of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ann Heald Grosshart (#378 of “Flemings”) does not know who authored the manuscript. The manuscript is a compilation of names, birth, marriage and death dates of descendants of Samuel and Jane McClintock Fleming (#4 of “Flemings’) and descendants of James and Elizabeth Lloyd Jamisons (#9 of “Jamisons”) (the two families were interrelated). The last date was the death of Lillie Fleming Heald (#113 of “Flemings”), who died 26 April 1947. The handwriting is by one person. Perhaps the author was Glenn Heald (1895–1992), son of Lillie Fleming Heald, but I suspect a main source for this material might have been Anna Stahl Fleming, wife of Samuel P. Fleming (#111 of Flemings). The material would indicate the author had a close relationship with both the Flemings and Jamisons. With few exceptions, the names and dates correlate with other sources.

- Dates for Hannah are from the St. Clair Cemetery records. There are both old and new St. Clair cemeteries, both associated with the Presbyterian Church. The old cemetery was located in the city of Greensburg. According to Boucher and Hedley (1918), Vol. II, p., 328, a city ordinance in about 1850 would not permit burials in the city. Most of those interred in the old Presbyterian Burying Ground (old St. Clair Cemetery) were moved to the new St. Clair Cemetery, located about a mile east of Greensburg. However, by the 1890s, many were still interred in the old cemetery, which “. . . yet with hundreds of bodies, tombstones that were not removed . . . covered with elders, briars and weeds of all sorts . . .”

In a subsequent deed, instituted and recorded 27 December 1864, William and Mary Jane sold land in Jackson Township to Hubbard L. Arnold of Rochester, New York for $12,000. This deed is interesting because it gives the history of transactions involving the land: The land was originally part of Lot 1249 and 1257 in Jackson Township, granted by Executive Council of Pennsylvania 21 December 1786 to Andrew Henderson, Lieutenant in the Army during the Revolutionary War, who by quit claim bequeathed the land to his wife and son John H. Henderson [no address given]; then the land to Robert Allison, whose wife Mary willed it to William Crawford and wife Elizabeth, then to William Ramsey, who conveyed by deed, dated 12 May 1860 part of the land to William Lloyd Jamison and Mary Ann his wife.
