9. JAMES3 JAMISON
(Robert2, Francis1);
(great great grandfather of the author), born 24 April 1775, probably Unity Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, but possibly in Mercersburg, Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania; died 1853 in Cherrytree Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania; buried in Cherrytree Cemetery, Venango County.68 James married 8 May 181769 ELIZABETH LLOYD, probably in Unity Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, born 28 November 1791, probably in Chester County, Pennsylvania;70 she died 6 December 1846 in Cherrytree Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and is buried in Cherrytree Cemetery, Venango County. Cherrytree Cemetery is in Cherrytree village. According to a Cherrytree Cemetery list compiled by Alice Morrison, Ruth Gilson and Elaine Peeples, 27 June 1977, James and Elizabeth are buried north of the lower road toward the center of the old portion of the cemetery enclosure with cedar tree. They are the first two graves in Row 1, reading east to west.71 The inscriptions on both stones, although weathered (especially Elizabeth’s), were still readable in 1997.
![]() Stone of James Jamison (#9) (1775-1853) in Cherrytree Cemetery, Cherrytree Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania; photo taken 1997 by Karen S. G. Rodgers. Assuming the dates are correct, James Jamison would have been about 43 when he married. See also discussion under first child of James. James was in the War of 1812 and stationed in Fort Meigs, Ohio72 (see under Francis Jamison, Jr., #5, for more details). The 1820 tax list, Unity Township, Westmoreland County, mentions James Jamison, age 50, as a farmer. Although his tombstone would have him age 45 in 1820, probably he was our James Jamison. James Jamison was listed in the 1828 tax list for Unity Township, born circa 1778.73 I have no information on Elizabeth Lloyd’s parents.74 As will be indicated, a first cousin of James Jamison, Francis Jamison, also married a Lloyd, Hannah Lloyd, who was a relative of General Anthony Wayne.75 Hannah was born 1789. One would suspect a relationship between Hannah and Elizabeth Lloyd—perhaps sisters. Two early Lloyds of Westmoreland County are listed in Tomichek (1998). Westmoreland Republican and Farmers’ Chronicle, Greensburg Pennsylvania:Friday, October 8 1824: Westmoreland Republican and Farmers’ Chronicle, Greensburg Pennsylvania: Friday, September 21 1827:
Two other Lloyd records from Westmoreland County are the death76 and will77 of John Lloyd, Sr.; died 22 April 1825 in his 77th year. In his will, John mentions wife Rachel, daughters Ann, married to Reuben Leirs?, Sarah, married to Abe? Chambers, daughters Rachel and sons Joseph, Ephraim, and John of Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland County, who was named executor. Land in Washington Township, Fayette County, was also mentioned. Hannah (Jamison) Fleming (#47) named one of her sons John Lloyd Fleming; hence the John Lloyd (Jr.) possibly could be Hannah’s father—although, based on the names of Elizabeth Lloyd Jamison’s children and the names of the children of her sister Hannah Lloyd Jamison, the father’s given name was possibly William. Regarding the relationship between our Lloyds and General Anthony (Mad Anthony) Wayne, I received an 18 December 1997 email from Robert Wayne, (email address upon request), who reported an Elizabeth Lloyd marrying Jacob Wayne 15 November 1781 in the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. Jacob Wayne was born 4 January 1760 and died 1857. Robert Wayne reports Jacob Wayne’s descent from General Anthony Wayne was as follows: Anthony Wayne to Jacob Wayne to William John Wayne (married Sarah Gillingham) to Jacob Wayne (married, first, Sarah Fisher, married, second, Elizabeth Lloyd). Jacob and Elizabeth Lloyd Wayne had children. Perhaps this Elizabeth Lloyd is related to our Lloyds, but as yet I have no proof. Since our Elizabeth Lloyd was a native of Chester County, Pennsylvania, the location would not rule out a connection between the two families. An 1843 Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, deed78 lists James Jamison and wife Elizabeth to James Gallager, all of Unity Township, and pertains to land adjoining Robert Jamison and part of larger tract patented to Robert Jamison and willed to James Jamison. Indenture was first made 2 March 1835. James and wife sold land parceled to James by Robert Jamison for $1000. Probably James and Elizabeth and family came to Venango County between 1835 and 1843 or 1844, perhaps to live with their son William, who brought a farm in Venango County in about 1840.79According to Bates (1899), page 809, James came to Venango County 15 years before he died, which would have been about 1838. James and Elizabeth’s daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, was known to have married a Venango County Fleming and Sarah’s first child, born in February 1845, was undoubtedly born in Venango County. By 1850, Elizabeth had died, and James and three unmarried daughters (Mary Ann, Hannah Rebecca and Martha) were living with James’s son William and his family in Cherrytree Township.80 In the same area at this time was the other son, Robert Brooks Jamison and his family.81 Robert’s dwelling number was # 631. Next door to Robert, in dwelling # 632,82 was an: I have not been able to associate Abraham with James and Elizabeth’s family, although his age would indicate he could have been James and Elizabeth’s son. I could find no deeds recorded in Venango County either in or out of James’s name, and no estate is filed for him there. However, there are several deeds in James Jamison’s name when he was in Unity and Hempfield Townships in Westmoreland County. But for some deeds it is impossible to be sure the James Jamison is our James Jamison, born 1775 or James Jamison (#24) (son of John), born circa 1794. And there might have been other James Jamisons in Westmoreland County at the time our James Jamison was there.
13. WILLIAM3 GAFF JAMISON (Robert2, Francis1); born circa 1782,84 or 1784,85 or 1790;86 in North America; married ELIZABETH WORKMAN, born circa 1796. She was a daughter of Samuel and Margery Carruthers Workman87 and a sister of Jane Workman, who married William’s brother, Robert Jamison, Jr. There was a Margaret Workman of Unity Township; died 6 July 1826 in her 60th year (born circa 1766).88 She could be Margery C. Workman, mother of Elizabeth (and Jane) Workman. William Gaff Jamison was a carpenter.89
Possibly another child was Jane Jamison, born circa 1817 in Pennsylvania, married Ralph Hunter, born circa 1818 in Pennsylvania. Their children known from the 1850 federal census (all born in Pennsylvania):92 (1) Thomas Hunter, born circa 1845; (2) William Hunter, born circa 1847; (3) and Margaret Hunter, born circa 1849. 15. ROBERT3 JAMISON, JR (Robert2, Francis1).
One land record lists his middle initial as “S,” but do not confuse with Robert S. (Smith) Jamison, born 1835, a son of Hugh Jamison. Robert, Jr., was born 31 January 1791 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; died 26 December 1886; buried in the Old Presbyterian Cemetery, Pleasant Unity, Pennsylvania; married JANE WORKMAN, born 8 December 1794; died 19 September 1881,93 buried in the Old Presbyterian Cemetery, Pleasant Unity, Pennsylvania. Her father was Samuel Workman, and her mother Margery Carruthers Workman. Jane was Elizabeth Workman’s sister, who married William Gaff Jamison. Robert inherited his father’s farm. Robert, Jr., was on the 1828 tax list for Unity Township. Robert started as a teacher and then began his active career in farming. He was an “old line” Whig and later a Republican; he was involved in Unity Township school activities and was school director in the Township for several years. He was in the War of 1812 and, as a soldier, helped build Fort Meigs. He and family were members of the Pleasant Unity Presbyterian Church.94 In 1860, Robert and Jane were living with their family in Unity Township, where Robert was enumerated as a farmer. Next door was Joseph J. Jamison and family, a son of Robert Jamison. ![]() Robert Jamison, Jr. (#15) (1791-1886). Date of photo not known; from Jamison (1992), page F-2, with permission. ![]() Jane (Workman) Jamison (#15) (1794-1881). Date of photo not known; from Jamison (1992), page F-2, with permission. Extracts of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Registry of Wills, Unity Township, Book 7, page 474, number 2, 1887. 7–474–Will of Robert Jamison of Westmoreland County:
The “friend” Robert S. Jamison would be Robert Smith Jamison, born 1835; died 1903, a son of Hugh Jamison (#20) and grandson of John Jamison. Robert S. would have been a first cousin, once removed, of Robert Jamison, Jr.
19. FRANCIS3 JAMISON (John2, Francis1); born 1779, in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania; died 18 April 1846; buried in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg, Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County; married HANNAH LLOYD, born 1789,101 died 16 April 1861; buried St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg.102 For information on "Old" and "New" ST. Clair Cemeteries, see endnote #102. Francis was listed as Francis Jamison, Sr., in the tax records, Westmoreland County 1846. In the 1831 tax list for Hempfield Township, Francis was listed as a gatekeeper (age 50), with two cows. In the 1838 tax list for Unity Township, Francis was listed as having 188 acres. Francis’s first cousin, our James Jamison, also married a Lloyd, Elizabeth Lloyd born 1791; and, as mentioned, one would suspect a relationship between Hannah and Elizabeth Lloyd—perhaps sisters, given one was born in 1789 and the other in 1791. Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Registry of Wills, Unity Township, Book 4, page 361, number 217, 1861: Extract of will of Hannah Jamison of Unity Township:
The 1850 federal census for Unity Township103 lists Hannah Jamison, born circa 1780 (whereas burial record show she was born 1789104); also listed in the 1850 census were Martha (presumably Jamison), born circa 1824, Hannah (presumably Jamison), born 1829, and Margaret (presumably Jamison), born circa 1832. In 1860, Hannah, widow, was living with her married daughter Hannah C. Zimmerman and family in Unity Township.105
20. HUGH3 MARTIN JAMISON (John2, Francis1); born circa 1785; died 1873; buried in Section U, New St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg;113 married JANE STEWART, born circa 1794.114 Hugh Jamison was on the 1828 tax list for Unity Township, listed as born circa 1786. Hugh Jamison was “a prominent and successful member of the community.” He was a farmer, taught in local schools, and was in the War of 1812.115 In 1870, Hugh was living with his son Robert and his family in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County.116
